Scores for Saturday 22 August 2020
A very bright and breezy day made for some challenging golf but perhaps more enjoyable than last week with no rain forecast.
Thanks Steve for sharing the video of our intrepid Peter Creighton playing not one recovery shot but two from his favourite position on the 10th. I found one of Peter’s balls on 10 in a very similar position whilst looking for my own wayward drive, this was duly returned to it’s owner on the 16th when we crossed paths. Also, thanks for the picture of Alex’s trick shot on 12, maybe a trip to the Fairground next time, try the ping pong balls into the gold fish bowls! Finally thanks to Martin for clearing up the confusion about bunkers being in and out of play by having the good sense to not trust his memory and take a photo of the sign in the club house. Someone should perhaps mention that placing such signs at the first tee might be a useful idea!
Birdies this week for John James (17), James Miller (16) and Andy Simpkin (1)
Scoring was generally reasonable and exceptional for a few this week despite the conditions. Average Stableford score was 30.93.
Our winner this week was none other than Roger Houdini Small with a magical 42 41 points. There was some dispute about how many shots Roger scored on 13 so I’ve gone with the non-mathematical Roger on this one. Roger stealthily strolled to 22 points on the front 9, catching Andy Simpkin unaware who thought he must have won the front 9. I think we were all taken by surprise as Roger was hitting a provisional ball off most tees only to find his first ball in the middle of the fairway. I think Roger hit somewhere in the region of 120 shots on his round but only 98 of them mattered. Roger kept the same form going on the back 9, helped in some parts by our fellow Early Birds in different groups pointing out where his mysterious shots had landed. I think it’s fair to say you played many solid and many strange golf shots on the round and it felt like a group effort 😉 Well done Roger!
In second place with 39 points was Pete Laurence. Pete managed a solid 39 points which was simply not good enough today to take the top prize. Well done Pete!
The front 9 goes to Andy Simpkin who posted 20 points on the front 9 and decided not to bother after the 11th hole when it was clear that he wasn’t going to be able to compete with Roger. Well done Andy!
Last but by no means least, the back 9 goes to John James with 21 points. John enquired about his handicap before the round started and when I told him said he must do something about that. A man true to his word, he posted a score of 38 points overall, normally that would have been good enough to take the winners prize and receive an extra .5 cut but today John has to make do with a 1.5 shot cut. Well done John!
No swindle next week gents, have a great couple of weeks and good luck to all those taking part in the Spring Cup.
