The 3rd weekend of lockdown II and I've chosen November 2018 for this week's look back. This report saw the return of Steve Reynolds after a short period in the wilderness and Pete Laurence was recovering from his stretch operation. Of course Tony well into his "Lucky is a winner" campaign so I've included the exchange between Paul and I at the end of the report.

Hopefully everyone is coping with the golfing furlough and finding ways to stay fit and healthy during this miserable period of an already miserable year. Only one more weekend to go before hopefully we're allowed out. Hang on in there gents and Enjoy reliving a past round.

The report

Before we get down to business this week, a few call-outs.

Firstly, welcome back to Steve Reynolds. Time off for good behaviour meant that he was able to re-join the club before the end of the year! Steve re-joins with a club handicap of 12.

Next, it was great to hear from Robert Landau this week and we look forward to welcoming you back at some point hopefully in the not too distant future.

Finally, Pete Laurence, it sounds like the recovery is going well and we look forward to welcoming you back once you can swap the walking stick for the golfing sticks.

Now to yesterday’s golf. It was a fine day if a little chilly to start with light winds and favourable golfing conditions. This is reflected in the average score this week of 31.36 with 8 out of 11 players scoring 30 or more.

In first place with a splendid 37 points is Peter Creighton. Some really good golf by Peter who posted his best gross score to date of 96. Well done Peter.

In second place, Andy Simpkin with another 37 points, beaten by Peter on countback. This was a popular result back in the club-house and Andy re-establishes himself at the head of the leader-board in the race to de-bar. Well done Andy!

The front 9 is taken by Keith with a solid 17 points. Well done Keith.

The back 9 is taken by yours truly with a handsome 20 points. Extraordinarily lucky by according to one eye witness.

Cuts go to the winners this week with extra 0.5 cuts for the first and second place who both scored 1 under their net par. Shots back to Jock, John, Martin Deery, Steve and Tony. Something to be happy about their Tony? 😉

All in all a fine outing from the Early Birds!

Paul's response to the report

Brian were you playing with Tony by any chance? There was a lot of luck around last week when Keith and I played with Tony 🙂

Paul G

My response to Paul

Luck is the concept that defines the experience of notably positive, negative, or improbable events. The naturalistic interpretation is that positive and negative events happen all the time in human lives, both due to random and non-random natural and artificial processes, and that even improbable events can happen by random chance. In this view, being "lucky" or "unlucky" is simply a descriptive label that points out an event's positivity, negativity, or improbability.

On this basis I think that maybe Tony was just trying to be positive? Or maybe perhaps he is using his own lack of luck as a baseline and describing our luck in relation to his own luck? Either way, I found it a very positive experience, thankyou Tony! 😊
