Before I get to the golf, I have a confession. No, I'm not a lady but I did enter Martin Lythgoe and I into a mixed pairs competition on bank holiday Monday. Richard Hyne pointed out my misunderstanding that it wasn't a mixed competition (as I'd read) but a mixed pairs competition by asking who was going to be the lady in our pair. Of course I volunteered Martin in his absence for this role, he does look prettier than me after all! (Sorry Martin) Don't worry, there will be no need for testosterone tests on the day, we have withdrawn from the competition and will instead be playing around casually, oops I mean playing a casual round.


The weather conditions were perfect this weekend despite the concerns in the week. The rain did arrive at various times in various places but we didn't get any until the round was nearly over and there was no wind at all. Unfortunately the course was rock hard which caused a few problems.

Birdies were scarce again today with only Pete Laurence scoring one on the 10th hole, well done Pete.

The scoring was good today with all but 3 scoring 30 or more resulting in an average stableford score of 31.42 and an average gross score of 91.5.

Our winner today, clearly inspired by potentially having the opportunity to impress a lady, was Richard Hyne with 40 points! Well done Richard, a fine score. Richards gross score was +5 on the day, one of the better scores this year. Richard also came second on countback in the summer league this week.

In second place with 36 points is Andy Simpkin. Andy started slow with 14 points on the front 9 but smashed the back 9 with 5/9 pars to bring up 22 points. Well done Andy!

Front 9 was taken by Roger Gibbs with 18 points. Roger just keeps on proving that despite his protestations his handicap IS appropriate. Well done Roger!

Last but not least and missing out on 2nd place on countback Martin Deery takes the back 9 with 20 points. Well done Martin, and especially well done as you helped bring our BPM summer league average score up to 33.5 today!

BTW for anyone remotely interested, Cobblers lost 3-1 to Rochdale, however I thoroughly enjoyed being at a match in normal conditions.

Middle of the green today! Windy again today, but that wasn't a problem! A nice warm brisk breeze from the south made it seem like we were driving into the wind for the most part today but we seemed to cope ok with that, it was the greens that were the problem. Even the best puts today were coming up short or swerving from the hole. All of them spent more time in the air than on the ground just bobbling along.  13 players set out today but only 12 returned. Jock was lost somewhere along the way leaving a 2-ball to wait patiently behind our 4 ball. Steve and Martin both made the most of the extra time they had (see below) Average scores were not great: 99.25 average gross score and 26.25 average stableford score. Judging from what I saw the putting was the biggest contributor to extra shots.  Only 2 birdies today. Martin Lythgoe on 10 and Brian Geddes on 18. Well done both! Still the extra time that Steve Reynolds had as a result helped him refocus for his back 9 and he came in...

  Ball hunting was the game this week, at least for some of our number. The rough has thickened given the recent rain and sunshine combination and it's making it very hard to find balls that find their way in, not ideal for our standard of golf. This combined with the firming up of the course would make ideal conditions for our one and only metro-gnome and it looked like he was in the hunt on the front 9 until his groin gave out following the other side effect of good weather, gardening duty. I have a sign for you Paul, refer to it on Thursdays or Fridays.... Anyway rest up and we'll see you back to form in no time.  The weather this week was stunning, summer having followed us back from Menorca, thankfully the wind hasn't followed us! The course is in fantastic shape but they have let the greens grow out a bit making putting pace a bit tricky to judge. I'm sure this resulted in a few shots left out there this week, it did in our group.  Average scores this week reflect...

  Due to Brian moving in the next few weeks the newsletter team is looking for a person to assist with the production of this newsletter, do you have the skills required, a flair for an arty production, at least a grade C in English Language 'O' level or GCSE. Please make contact. No interview required and no remuneration provided, what more could you want? Anyway on to the golf.................... The day started out a bit chilly but turned into a beautiful day. The course was in fabulous condition with the bunkers that were in play in a good state. Lots of work going on around the course with a number of bunkers being worked on and the removal of the old winter green on the second, how many more will disappear I wonder?  A chip in for Andy Simpkin on the 6th to make a par even though it was a thinned shot, but I won't mention that. A monster 50ft putt for Jason on a hole that escapes my memory, told you I would forget by the time I got home Pete L. The average gross score...
