 Autumn is here!


Forecasts of heavy rain have proven accurate looking outside my window as I type up this report. The weather was kind to us early birds but we were a little damp by the time we'd finished the round.

Only 10 turned out in the end today and 3 didn't make a full 18. I'm guessing that Tony was distracted given his front 9, slightly worse than mine last week. 

An enjoyable round today with some good banter and some unusual holes. For instance, on the 7th hole two of our party were on or around the green, one was in a bunker and one was in the rough not far from the tee. The strange thing was that only Pete, who was the player in the rough, managed a par. Jock 3 putted, Steve could only muster a 4 and I managed a 5 from the bunker. 

On 14, the same happened but with a different player. I hit my ball way right into the rough and the others were up around the green. I managed to get up and down out of the rough then putted out. Steve managed a 4-1, the rest didn't score.

Birdies today for James (5) Me (2) Steve Reynolds (5) and Jock Hunter (2) Well done all. Our group, the Early Birdies, almost managed a full-house but it seems that Peter Laurence is saving his for tomorrow.

First place today goes to James Miller with 35 points on countback from yours truly. Welcome back James, good to see you getting some red on the board. Well done.

In second place yours truly with 35 points. I only managed 4 pars today and a birdie but it could have been a lot better. Well done me.

The front 9 was taken by Jock with 19 points. Well done Jock.

The back 9 was taken by Steve Reynolds with 15 points. Well done Steve.

So, if it was a team game today, our team was best, taking positions 2-5 and taking nearly all the honours. However, it is not a team sport and James was best today, well done James.

Looking forward to Wokefield park tomorrow, our own little Reading festival.

Middle of the green today! Windy again today, but that wasn't a problem! A nice warm brisk breeze from the south made it seem like we were driving into the wind for the most part today but we seemed to cope ok with that, it was the greens that were the problem. Even the best puts today were coming up short or swerving from the hole. All of them spent more time in the air than on the ground just bobbling along.  13 players set out today but only 12 returned. Jock was lost somewhere along the way leaving a 2-ball to wait patiently behind our 4 ball. Steve and Martin both made the most of the extra time they had (see below) Average scores were not great: 99.25 average gross score and 26.25 average stableford score. Judging from what I saw the putting was the biggest contributor to extra shots.  Only 2 birdies today. Martin Lythgoe on 10 and Brian Geddes on 18. Well done both! Still the extra time that Steve Reynolds had as a result helped him refocus for his back 9 and he came in...

  Ball hunting was the game this week, at least for some of our number. The rough has thickened given the recent rain and sunshine combination and it's making it very hard to find balls that find their way in, not ideal for our standard of golf. This combined with the firming up of the course would make ideal conditions for our one and only metro-gnome and it looked like he was in the hunt on the front 9 until his groin gave out following the other side effect of good weather, gardening duty. I have a sign for you Paul, refer to it on Thursdays or Fridays.... Anyway rest up and we'll see you back to form in no time.  The weather this week was stunning, summer having followed us back from Menorca, thankfully the wind hasn't followed us! The course is in fantastic shape but they have let the greens grow out a bit making putting pace a bit tricky to judge. I'm sure this resulted in a few shots left out there this week, it did in our group.  Average scores this week reflect...

  Due to Brian moving in the next few weeks the newsletter team is looking for a person to assist with the production of this newsletter, do you have the skills required, a flair for an arty production, at least a grade C in English Language 'O' level or GCSE. Please make contact. No interview required and no remuneration provided, what more could you want? Anyway on to the golf.................... The day started out a bit chilly but turned into a beautiful day. The course was in fabulous condition with the bunkers that were in play in a good state. Lots of work going on around the course with a number of bunkers being worked on and the removal of the old winter green on the second, how many more will disappear I wonder?  A chip in for Andy Simpkin on the 6th to make a par even though it was a thinned shot, but I won't mention that. A monster 50ft putt for Jason on a hole that escapes my memory, told you I would forget by the time I got home Pete L. The average gross score...
