Christmas Cup - Saturday 11 December 2021
Fair conditions with a mild ground frost to start the day made for a Christmassy feel to this years competition. A field of 14 set out to compete in the 4th annual Christmas "Cup", competing for an IOU as the "Cup" is safely behind bars in Martin Deery's trophy room, Richard Hyne having entrusted Martin to look after the "Cup" as he didn't have a trophy room himself.
The first few greens were a little challenging to due to frost but conditions were near perfect for this time of year, if you ignore the sticky mud that is.
A few adjustments to swindle scores applied as win adjustments were lifted for this competition and scores did not count towards annual statistics so good scoring was anticipated.
There were birdies this week for Roger Small (18) Pete Laurence (5, 14) Brian Geddes (7,11) Jock Hunter (7) James Miller (5,9) and Duncan Miller (9) Well done all.
Richard had organised nearest the pins for the par 3s with no longest drive to give someone other than the Miller brothers a fighting chance.
Nearest the pins went to Steve Brewerton (3) Jock Hunter (7) Pete Laurence (14) and Richard Hyne (17) £5 prize for each of those, well done gents.
Overall the scoring was excellent with only 3 players failing to break 30 points, no wind and receptive greens obviously suiting us early birds. The average gross score was a mere 89.3 and the average stableford score was 32.14! Both of these may be records for the group.
The front 9 went to Jock Hunter with 20 points, a full 2 points clear of the chasing pack of 3 eligible players with 18 points. Well done Jock.
The back 9 went to Tony Froud who had been snapping at my heals 1 point behind me all the way round the back 9 before bettering me by 2 points on the last 2 holes. 18 points was enough for this 9 on countback from Pete Laurence who failed to capitalise on 18. Well done lucky Tone!
In second place was Roger Small with 39 points. Roger only managed 14 on the front 9 but posted a massive 25 points on the back 9 including a 4 pointer on 16 and 5 pointer on 18. Well done Roger!
In first place with a huge 43 points (23/20) is Paul (the champ, the metro-gnome) Gardner. Paul shot gross 82 (+10) and was just 4 over on the turn. Well done Paul, no controversy in that result, an awesome round!
Next week is the final official swindle of the year with the RTDB and POTY still in the balance it will round off a season of very tightly fought contests and no doubt there will be a few twists and turns.
Have a great week gents and stay safe.
