Scores for Saturday 12 February 2022

Apologies for the late posting of this report but I had to dash off to Cornwall after my round and I'm now writing this report as the sun comes up over Widemouth Bay. 

Back to swindling after a couple of weeks of Captain's out and in. Some good results for the members of the swindle. Myself and Martin Lythgoe were part of the top two groups in the Drive Out and Peter Creighton and Jock Hunter were 2nd and 3rd in the Drive in. Also, as mentioned by MetroGnome on the WhatsApp, 7 Early Birds in the top 20! 

The weather was ok considering it's the middle of February. A bit windy but quite mild and fairly firm course conditions with the grass starting to grow again. Spring is just round the corner!

Well done to Peter Creighton for getting a round posted in the end. 0740, 09:56 and 08:36 were I think just some of the tee times that Peter was up for. Tony kindly dropped out to make space for Peter on an Early Birds slot. Looks like Richard turned down the opportunity to post a swindle score!

Only 3 birdies today. Jock Hunter (3) Paul Gardner (11) and Steve Reynolds (3) Well done gents.

Our winner today, Jock Hunter, matched his score of 39 on the Captain's Drive in but had no countback to contend with today so took the top spot without challenge. Well done Jock!

In second place is Peter Creighton, unable to better Jock today but beating Steve Reynolds and Paul Gardner on countback with 34 points. Well done Peter!

The front 9 went to Andy Simpkin with 21 points! Andy collapsed spectacularly on the back 9, possibly rushing a bit after we'd been warned for "slow play" on the turn or perhaps protecting his handicap? Well done Andy!

Last but not least Roger Gibbs stepped up to take the back 9 with 16 points. Well done Roger!

Middle of the green today! Windy again today, but that wasn't a problem! A nice warm brisk breeze from the south made it seem like we were driving into the wind for the most part today but we seemed to cope ok with that, it was the greens that were the problem. Even the best puts today were coming up short or swerving from the hole. All of them spent more time in the air than on the ground just bobbling along.  13 players set out today but only 12 returned. Jock was lost somewhere along the way leaving a 2-ball to wait patiently behind our 4 ball. Steve and Martin both made the most of the extra time they had (see below) Average scores were not great: 99.25 average gross score and 26.25 average stableford score. Judging from what I saw the putting was the biggest contributor to extra shots.  Only 2 birdies today. Martin Lythgoe on 10 and Brian Geddes on 18. Well done both! Still the extra time that Steve Reynolds had as a result helped him refocus for his back 9 and he came in...

  Ball hunting was the game this week, at least for some of our number. The rough has thickened given the recent rain and sunshine combination and it's making it very hard to find balls that find their way in, not ideal for our standard of golf. This combined with the firming up of the course would make ideal conditions for our one and only metro-gnome and it looked like he was in the hunt on the front 9 until his groin gave out following the other side effect of good weather, gardening duty. I have a sign for you Paul, refer to it on Thursdays or Fridays.... Anyway rest up and we'll see you back to form in no time.  The weather this week was stunning, summer having followed us back from Menorca, thankfully the wind hasn't followed us! The course is in fantastic shape but they have let the greens grow out a bit making putting pace a bit tricky to judge. I'm sure this resulted in a few shots left out there this week, it did in our group.  Average scores this week reflect...

  Due to Brian moving in the next few weeks the newsletter team is looking for a person to assist with the production of this newsletter, do you have the skills required, a flair for an arty production, at least a grade C in English Language 'O' level or GCSE. Please make contact. No interview required and no remuneration provided, what more could you want? Anyway on to the golf.................... The day started out a bit chilly but turned into a beautiful day. The course was in fabulous condition with the bunkers that were in play in a good state. Lots of work going on around the course with a number of bunkers being worked on and the removal of the old winter green on the second, how many more will disappear I wonder?  A chip in for Andy Simpkin on the 6th to make a par even though it was a thinned shot, but I won't mention that. A monster 50ft putt for Jason on a hole that escapes my memory, told you I would forget by the time I got home Pete L. The average gross score...
