Scores for Saturday 19 March 2022
Sunshine all the way today and the time for the legs to come out.
Fine sunny conditions on the golf course this morning with a brisk easterly wind to remind us that it's technically still winter! We started the weekend with potential for controversy with our competition master, on one of his very rare posts on WhatsApp, suggesting we should perhaps abandon the rules of the game in favour of having fun. Well, the early group were having none of it and voted 3 to 0 that we should play by the actual rules of golf. This wasn't to help us at all but I will sleep easy tonight knowing that no matter how bad the rules make your round seem on paper, there is always someone worse off than yourself.
Before we get to the scoring I'll share a few of my more comedy moments on what was a pretty underwhelming round for me. On the first hole I hit a reasonable drive into the rough on the right of the course. Finding the rough of course means the ball stops a bit quicker than normal and I had a good 200 yards for my second shot. Of course I went from the rough to the woods then had to chip out and managed to blob the first. The round continued in this manner with most of my drives drifting right into rough or bunker. On the 5th I managed to clear the bunkers to the right and thankfully stopped before bouncing into the long rough. Not bad I thought, my trusty 3 wood will work wonders from there. I managed a spectacular air shot much to the delight of my playing companions, Miller and Miller. My Irons and putting were comedy most of the round with the highlight being on the 15th where I was about 6 feet off the green after 2 and decided a delicate chip was in order... WRONG!! I chipped into the bunker on the other side of the green. Deep breath, bunker shots aren't so bad are they? Yes they are! I managed to scoop my ball out of the bunker some 40 yards onto the fairway leaving me much worse off than I started. A few more holes of comedy golf remained before I retired for an early bath.
So, if we had implemented the suggested pick and place anywhere, bunkers out of play and whatever other advantage we decided was expedient I have no doubt my round would have been about 5-6 shots to the good. As it is I'm happy that we played by the rules, it seems much more fun that way!
Finally before I get to the winners etc. I had to do a double-take today when I looked at the leader-board. I assumed for instance that Roger Small and Andy Simpkin had not played today. Rest assured Andy your record low score of 12 remains untroubled.
Birdies today for James (6 and 9) and Richard (8) Well done Gents.
Our winner today with 36 points was a late substitute for none other than Lucky Tone. Yes Coenraad stepped in to take the prize. Tony, it could've been you!! Well done Coenraad.
James Miller took the second spot with a solid 34 points. He missed a few puts today and definitely could've scored much better so watch out Steve, he's got his eye on that eclectic top spot! Well done James.
Jock Hunter took the front 9 with 17 points on countback from Martin Lythgoe and Steve Reynolds. Well done Jock.
The back 9 went to Roger Gibbs with 16 points on countback from Richard Hyne. Well done Roger!
Next week is the yellow ball comp then we have the JJ Cup, hopefully this spell of good weather continues for that weekend.
Have a great week gentlemen and good luck next weekend.
