Scores for Saturday 5 March 2022
A little cold and more than a little windy this week but I think we were happy to have the course open and to be out playing. The course was wet and muddy and the wind was a big hinderance on some of the more exposed holes. This didn't stop all but two players scoring less than 100 today with an average score of 91.8 and average stableford score of 30.92.
According to an unnamed source, the wind helped Roger Small to slice first and second ball into the woods off the first tee today. This didn't stop Roger giving some advice to James Miller on the 5th when he was having trouble chipping on. It would appear from the score that Roger's advice didn't help on 5 but inspire James to pars on the next two holes. The inspiration continued on the back 9 where on the 12th James hit the ball into the hedge and received a "lucky" bounce out (10 yards back) then proceeded to get over the hedge and up and down for Par!
Birdies today for Steve Reynolds (5,6) James Miller (2,16) Duncan Miller (14) and Pete Laurence (11) Well done gents!
Our winner today, Peter Creighton, got up nice and early, started badly but pulled himself together on the second half of the back 9 then went on to post 36 to win on countback from the Steve Reynolds. Steve was on the charge but couldn't match Pete's 20 on the back 9. Well done Pete.
Steve Reynolds, of course, managed second place also with 36 points. It's worth pointing out that Steve was playing off 7 and giving Peter 15 shots. Well done Steve, another great round.
The front 9 went to Tony Froud with 18 points. His luck didn't hold out on the back 9 of course. Well done Tony.
The back 9 went to James Miller with 18 points. It's good to see James back in the 70s but he's struggling to keep up with Steve. Well done James.
Next week is 3 clubs and putter so good luck all taking part, let's keep the run of Early Birds competition placings going.
Have a great week gentlemen.
Just for the record books, we should also mention:
ReplyDeleteSteve getting back to back birdies on 5 and 6, with a massive putt on the latter, which was so desperate to go in it took a break up the hill in the final foot. Steve was on form this week with nearly all his approaches going straight at the pins.
Andy forgot how to play golf on the back 9. Shanking his tee shot on 12 out of bounds, then pegging up a second ball he played the exact same shank out of bounds.
After picking up half way down 15, he spent the extra time on the 16th tee to get his mind in the right place. Sadly the driver wasn't on the same page and barely connected with the ball leaving him only 10 yards closer. Another fine 10 yard duff got him past the ladies tee, but by this time the ball had had enough and despite finally connecting with shot 3 it chose to fly away left and out of bounds.
To the 18th. A better but still erroneous tee shot just stayed in bounds 50 yards from the tee. Recovering to the fairway, Andy completed his round in style by firing his approach out of bounds again.
Some days golf just doesn't make sense.
