Perfect conditions for golf! A more receptive and recovering course thanks to recent rainfall, light winds and a comfortable low 20s made for a great day of golf. 

A big thanks to James for his help in coming second in the Greensomes competition yesterday at the LME GA Captains day at Woking golf club, his often spectacular drives saved me taking extra shots which helped with recovery before today's round. 

Starting early definitely worked for our small advance party with an average score of 37.6 between the three of us! The scoring today was probably the best I've seen since I started covering the Early Birds swindle. All but two players broke through the 30 point barrier today bringing the stableford average up to 34.21 and the average gross score was also well down at 90.1. I think these may both be records!

Birdies today for Duncan Miller (5, 10 and 15!) Brian Geddes (9 and 16) Richard Hyne (11) and Roger Small (9) Well done all, a nice bag of birdies!

Duncan Miller is our winner today with stunning round of 78, missing a bunch of birdie puts but enough to score 41 points, 17 out and 24 in. Well done Duncan, an excellent round!

In second place is myself with 40 points! I also left a few out there including 2 shots on the 18th but I don't mind losing out to Duncan on this one. Well done me.

A mention for Peter Creighton and Pete Laurence who both score 37 points but win nothing!

The front 9 went to Tony who scored 20 points on the front 9, winning on countback to Pete Laurence,  before crumbling on the back 9. I'm guessing your heal was your Achilles heal this week? Well done Tony!

The back 9 went to Steve Brewerton with a very respectable 20 points. Well done Stevie B.

Good luck to all of you playing in Captain's day next week and good luck to the few of you playing in the swindle the following week. I will complete the score updates when I return from France on 20th Sept. See you on the 24th!

Middle of the green today! Windy again today, but that wasn't a problem! A nice warm brisk breeze from the south made it seem like we were driving into the wind for the most part today but we seemed to cope ok with that, it was the greens that were the problem. Even the best puts today were coming up short or swerving from the hole. All of them spent more time in the air than on the ground just bobbling along.  13 players set out today but only 12 returned. Jock was lost somewhere along the way leaving a 2-ball to wait patiently behind our 4 ball. Steve and Martin both made the most of the extra time they had (see below) Average scores were not great: 99.25 average gross score and 26.25 average stableford score. Judging from what I saw the putting was the biggest contributor to extra shots.  Only 2 birdies today. Martin Lythgoe on 10 and Brian Geddes on 18. Well done both! Still the extra time that Steve Reynolds had as a result helped him refocus for his back 9 and he came in...

  Ball hunting was the game this week, at least for some of our number. The rough has thickened given the recent rain and sunshine combination and it's making it very hard to find balls that find their way in, not ideal for our standard of golf. This combined with the firming up of the course would make ideal conditions for our one and only metro-gnome and it looked like he was in the hunt on the front 9 until his groin gave out following the other side effect of good weather, gardening duty. I have a sign for you Paul, refer to it on Thursdays or Fridays.... Anyway rest up and we'll see you back to form in no time.  The weather this week was stunning, summer having followed us back from Menorca, thankfully the wind hasn't followed us! The course is in fantastic shape but they have let the greens grow out a bit making putting pace a bit tricky to judge. I'm sure this resulted in a few shots left out there this week, it did in our group.  Average scores this week reflect...

  Due to Brian moving in the next few weeks the newsletter team is looking for a person to assist with the production of this newsletter, do you have the skills required, a flair for an arty production, at least a grade C in English Language 'O' level or GCSE. Please make contact. No interview required and no remuneration provided, what more could you want? Anyway on to the golf.................... The day started out a bit chilly but turned into a beautiful day. The course was in fabulous condition with the bunkers that were in play in a good state. Lots of work going on around the course with a number of bunkers being worked on and the removal of the old winter green on the second, how many more will disappear I wonder?  A chip in for Andy Simpkin on the 6th to make a par even though it was a thinned shot, but I won't mention that. A monster 50ft putt for Jason on a hole that escapes my memory, told you I would forget by the time I got home Pete L. The average gross score...
