Aldwickbury Park Early Birds Christmas Cup 2022

What better weather for the Christmas Cup than sub zero temperatures, no wind and a chilly sunlit morning. IT WAS FREEZING when we started and the ground never defrosted for the entire round. This made for some very entertaining, if somewhat frustrating, golf shots. Hit the fairway and watch it run for miles, hit the green at your peril!

13 players started this year, with Richard Hyne deciding that playing in these conditions was not going to be fun. The hardy 13 started out at 08:28 and the first four ball were the first to discover just how hard the round was going to be when they hit the front of the first green only to see the ball nearly off the back of the first green!

You needed a hole made by someone else in order to be able to insert a tee into the tee box and in the shade it was COOOLLLLDDD!!

So we all settled in to our "rhythm" and tried to ignore the score!

Paul Gardner's game was clearly made for this weather. The gentle tap tap down the middle of the fairway was getting him there or there abouts in regulation allowing him to steadily bogey his way around the front 9 and step up the pace a little on the front 9. You knew it was going to be his day when he hit his second shot on 13 into the greenside bunker only to find it was GUR. Of course all of the bunkers were GUR but no-one told the first group!!

Yes, Paul Gardner won the day with a very ordinary 35 points. Ordinary in those conditions was in fact excellent golf. Well done Paul!

4 points back with 31 points, Duncan Miller took the second spot. Duncan got round in 89, the second best gross score of the day. Well done Duncan.

Front 9 went to Pete Laurence with 15 points. Pete steadied himself after a ropey start and played well given the conditions. Well done Pete.

The back 9 went to none other than Roger half round Gibbs with 18 points! Roger adds to his ever growing list of games of two halves. Well done Roger.

NTP was not won so the prize instead went to Peter Creighton who got 3rd place overall on countback from Steve Brewerton and Pete Laurence. Well done Pete.

Longest Drive on 5 went to Brian Geddes. Well done Me!

NTP in 2 on 18 went to Steve Reynolds. Well done Steve for keeping it on the green in those conditions.

(Hopefully) 3 more rounds before the end of the year gentlemen. Enjoy the Christmas parties etc this week and see you out in the cold next weekend.
