Scores for Saturday 31 December 2022
Yes, this was the weather situation as we teed off this morning, it was wet, wet and wetter!
Although for those of us non fair-weather golfers, the reward for going out was about 7 holes without rain!
It was raining lightly for a couple of holes then let up for the rest of the front 9 before it gradually got heavier and heavier throughout the back 9. As I write this missive, it is near pitch-dark at 15:53! A typical new years eve I guess.
It was suggested that today it was like millionaires golf but it was immediately pointed out that it was nothing like that as millionaires tended to play in fair weather conditions on immaculate golf courses. Well it was like millionaires golf in one regard, there were VERY few people out playing today.
We went out in 3 groups today having several late drop-outs. 11 intrepid early-birders started and finished the round today with POTY to play for the last group went out seeking glory. It was a bit tense to start with with Pete Laurence employing intimidation tactics a la Martinez, walking in front of me on the 3rd tee and nearly hitting Andy on the 4th fairway with a "wayward" 3rd shot. Things calmed down though and apart from the obvious dampness it was an enjoyable round.
Scoring was surprisingly good today with all but one player (me) scoring 30 or more and the average stableford being up at 33.18 and gross down at 86.4!
The front 9 faired well for most with an average score of 18.5, 4 shots better than the back 9! 8 out of 11 scored 18 or more, a remarkable achievement given how wet the course was.
There were 4 birdies today: Pete Laurence (7) James Miller (4) and Steve Brewerton (2 and 9) Well done gents!
Today's winner, Duncan Miller, played exactly as well as the second placed person, Martin Lythgoe, on both the front and the back 9, both scoring 39 points (21 out, 18 back) Duncan blobbed the 10th hole rather than the 18th thereby winning on countback. Well done both!
Andy Simpkin takes the front 9 with 20 points. Well done Andy!
Steve Brewerton took the back 9 today with 16 points on countback from the bridesmaid. Well done Stevie B!
Happy New Year all, see you in 2023!
