This week continued a spell of adverse conditions! The rain has gone but the frost has replaced it. 

This made for some comedy golf including: inability to use driver on some holes due to not being able to get a tee in, hitting the green being penalised by bouncing straight through the green, random bounce when the ball hit the ground. It was hard, quite literally!

The scores reflected the difficult conditions with average stableford down at 28.

Some stories came my way yesterday afternoon and I'll do my best to relay some. 

James somehow managed 4 birdies including a 50 yard chip in on 13, only witnessed by James I'm afraid as everyone else was struggling with their own issues. Did it happen if nobody saw it? Discuss.

There was a rumour that Pete may have played a risk shot with one foot on the frozen lake, I hope he didn't ground his club!

Duncan managed to chip onto the lake only to have the ball bounce into the bunker. Lucky? Discuss

Paul Gardner was going strong with 20 points after 9 holes but on 11 he lost his ball and his playing partners (allegedly) didn't help him look. Rude? Discuss

Personally I was penalised several times for hitting the green, too often resulting in 0 points. 

A round I'll choose to forget but it was nice being out in the sunshine.

So, 5 birdies today, wow!! James (1,3,13 and his nemesis 18!) and one for Pete Laurence on 16. Well done both indeed.

Our winner with 32 points was James Miller. He chose the steady route of 16 out and 16 in, helped massively by those 4 birdies. Well done James. Great start to retain your 2022 titles in 2023!

Martin Deery came in second on countback from Paul Gardner with 31 points. He thought it best to save his best to the back 9 and takes the second spot. Well done Martin.

Paul Gardner thankfully had something to show for his amazing 20 points on the front 9. Well done Paul.

Pete Laurence took the back 9 on countback from Roger Gibbs and Peter Williams. Well done Pete. 

Hopefully the course will thaw by next week and we can play some proper golf.

Middle of the green today! Windy again today, but that wasn't a problem! A nice warm brisk breeze from the south made it seem like we were driving into the wind for the most part today but we seemed to cope ok with that, it was the greens that were the problem. Even the best puts today were coming up short or swerving from the hole. All of them spent more time in the air than on the ground just bobbling along.  13 players set out today but only 12 returned. Jock was lost somewhere along the way leaving a 2-ball to wait patiently behind our 4 ball. Steve and Martin both made the most of the extra time they had (see below) Average scores were not great: 99.25 average gross score and 26.25 average stableford score. Judging from what I saw the putting was the biggest contributor to extra shots.  Only 2 birdies today. Martin Lythgoe on 10 and Brian Geddes on 18. Well done both! Still the extra time that Steve Reynolds had as a result helped him refocus for his back 9 and he came in...

  Ball hunting was the game this week, at least for some of our number. The rough has thickened given the recent rain and sunshine combination and it's making it very hard to find balls that find their way in, not ideal for our standard of golf. This combined with the firming up of the course would make ideal conditions for our one and only metro-gnome and it looked like he was in the hunt on the front 9 until his groin gave out following the other side effect of good weather, gardening duty. I have a sign for you Paul, refer to it on Thursdays or Fridays.... Anyway rest up and we'll see you back to form in no time.  The weather this week was stunning, summer having followed us back from Menorca, thankfully the wind hasn't followed us! The course is in fantastic shape but they have let the greens grow out a bit making putting pace a bit tricky to judge.   Due to Brian moving in the next few weeks the newsletter team is looking for a person to assist with the production of this newsletter, do you have the skills required, a flair for an arty production, at least a grade C in English Language 'O' level or GCSE. The day started out a bit chilly but turned into a beautiful day. The course was in fabulous condition with the bunkers that were in play in a good state. Lots of work going on around the course with a number of bunkers being worked on and the removal of the old winter green on the second, how many more will disappear I wonder?  A chip in for Andy Simpkin on the 6th to make a par even though it was a thinned shot, but I won't mention that.
