It was a little windy this week which I guess is to be expected as the seasons change. The weather was otherwise warm except on the 18th hole for the last group where we suffered a brief hail storm as we approached the green.

The weather took it's toll on most of the field again, particularly Roger Gibbs who celebrated beating Andy's lowest score on the 14th hole leading us in the last group to think that he was celebrating a rare birdie on one of the most difficult holes. Average scores were down at 27.53 for stableford and up at 94.7 for gross.

I had reserved a slot for a story from Roger Gibbs but it hasn't materialised at time of going to press so I'll leave him to share that one via WhatsApp.

I had the pleasure of a round with the Miller bros. this week and have a few stories to share. First was the remarkable start they both had. James started off in his usual style and smashed a drive down the middle of the first fairway, on in regulation then a nice birdie to get his round going. Then uncharacteristically he put his tee shot on the second way right and short. Duncan started off the first hole with his customary topped tee shot resulting in a 6 for 1 then also proceeded to duff his tee shot on the second resulting in the Miller bros both being way back from Pete Creighton and I who had both hit reasonable if slightly left tee shots. James went on to sky his tee shot on 5 resulting in the phot below.

Obviously the balance of the universe needed very much to be restored and of course it was starting on 8. James found himself in the rough just beyond the green and had a nasty little chip to approach the pin which was close to him at the back of the green. Those of you who play with James regularly will know that chipping is his one weakness but I think he may've found a new way to deal with the frailties of this aspect of his game. He stood over the ball nervously and proceeded to duff his chip and the shot was destined to be a 3 footer but as his club followed through he caught the ball and helped it onto the green about 4 feet from the pin where he managed to put out for par. Lucky TonE thankfully had chosen to join an earlier group rather than requesting joining the late starters so didn't get to witness this example of low handicapper luck. James repeated this later on in the round again putting himself in a favourable position. Deliberate? (discuss) I demonstrated how double hits should penalise rather than benefit you on 14. I was about 2 feet off the green in the rough near to the pin so had a very tricky downhill chip to get close to the pin. I, like James, was nervous about the outcome given my recent form. I, unlike James, hit exactly the shot I hoped for and the ball was heading to the edge of the green to roll nicely down to the pin but, as my club followed through the club face reunited with my ball and carried off down to the bottom of the green leaving me a very difficult put for a point. Needless to say, I wasn't lucky enough to bag said point!!

Anyway, enough about troubles on course and onto the successes on course.

Birdies today were not surprisingly quite scarce: James (1 and 4) Andy Simpkin (10) Well done James! (and Andy)

Our winner today managed a regulation 36 points. Peter Williams went out in 19 and back in 17, excellent given the conditions. Well done Peter.

Roger Small came in second with 34 points. Well done Roger!

Jock Hunter, high on adrenaline after his nearly successful booking duty took the front 9 with 17 points on countback from Richard Hyne. Well done Jock!

Peter Creighton was 3rd overall after a solid round and managed to take the back 9 with a very solid 18 points. His readiness to find trees on the first really scuppered what would otherwise he would've been in contention for the first or second spot. Well done Peter.

Only a few weeks until the Belfry so hopefully our form improves a bit over the next few matches.

Have a great week gents, see you soon!
