Yes the rain came down and we all got a little damp. Thankfully it was not cold, the wind was light and when it eventually stopped raining it was quite pleasant. The course unfortunately was very squelchy underfoot, the bunkers were awful and the rough was dreadful making for some very ordinary golf for the most part.

That said, the receptive greens made for plenty of birdie opportunities. There were several in our group although only two managed to be converted and it was a tale of anything you can do I can do better. James and Pete both found the 10th green in regulation but Pete was within a few feet and James had a long put. Having played with Pete last week when for at least the first nine I was referring to him as 3 putt Pete, his 3 footer was by no means a certainty on one of the flatest greens on the course and James is normally a lot closer for his converted birdies. James hit a great long put which dropped in the hole putting the pressure on Pete to make his "tap-in." Up steps 2 Putt Pete and misses his opportunity to convert! We chuckled as we made our way round the rest of the course with Pete generally making his second put but not his first. He broke the cycle on 15 where he putted a difficult downhill put in 1, here comes 1 putt Pete! He repeated this on 16 to make his par and all was good with the world. On 17 I pulled my tee shot left leaving me a nasty lie in the short boggy rough. Pete proceeded to push his shot just off the green to the right. James hit a superb shot which left him a few feet for birdie, a sure thing! Pete took stock of the situation and decided that chipping was the way to go as he had some rough to contend with. He patiently waits for me to duff two chips to get on the dance floor then lines up and chips straight in the hole to become no put Pete. It was an excellent birdie and turned the tables on James and put him under pressure to put out as Pete had done to him on 10. James was struggling to put out on recent holes, coming up short on a couple including a birdie opportunity on 16 and he did the same here.

Average scores today were up at 93.5 gross and down at 28.07 stableford. Of course as seems to be the way recently, we had a couple break away from the pack.

There were 7 birdies today: Martin Lythgoe (10, 11) Pete Laurence (17) James Miller (10) Steve Reynolds (2) Tony Froud (9) and Paul Gardner (9) Well done gents

Our winner today is a very serious fellow when he's in the zone, he's in fact been called a miserable git on occasion (by me) as he refuses to be drawn into banter or anything that might distract him so I expect the people in his group may've found him less than great company from the 7th hole where he put together a run of 5 holes which started with 3 pars and continued with two birdies. Yes, our sole double birdie scorer today, Martin Lythgoe wins with 38 points, 18 out and 20 back. A remarkable score which I assume meant he was finding the fairways. Well done Martin.

Pete (no putt) Laurence came in second with a solid 35 points. Pete will be happy to have a cut as he is clearly finding it distracting having more than 7 shots on the course. Well done Pete.

The front 9 went to Steve Reynolds who shot 18 out. Well done Steve.

The back 9 went to Pete Williams with 16 on countback from Pete Creighton and James Miller. Well done Pete.

I finish with this picture of Tony from the 11th tee in his non-regulation attire. You'll notice that he doesn't have regulation trousers or shoes on for his round, ruffian!

Have a great week all, see you next weekend.
