Scores for Saturday 12 August 2023
We have a new record for the Early Birds, the shortest drive. This picture is of Duncan taking his second shot, with his first ball on the first tee today at 07:48. Technically not the shortest as I think Roger Gibbs and James are both on record as having gone backwards off the tee on separate occasions in the past.
Duncan's 4 month lay-off through injury left him so eager to play golf that the excitement got the better of him on the first tee and he swung and managed to somehow push the ball just in front of his tee but still behind the tee position. This was the start of the round which saw a range of golf from a sideways chip from yours truly on 14, a near eagle on 18, Pete Williams nearly skimming the ball over the lake on 10, a shank from Pete Laurence on 12 (yes, a shank!) and more besides. Anyhow, it was good to see Duncan back out on the course even if his golf is still taking a break.
Good conditions for golf today when we started out although the wind was picking up towards the end of the round.
Average scoring was ok with average gross at 93.9 and average stableford at 29.79 but with a 19 point spread between first and last.
We couldn't manage a birdie in our group today despite quite a few chances but there were 3 from the swindle: Andy (1 and 18) and Paul Gardner (18) Well done gents.
The winner today has been playing some terrible golf throughout the winter and in the first half of the year resulting in a handicap of 28, quite a few shots worse than last year, so a bumper score was bound to happen. Yes, it was me, scoring 40 points (20/20) despite a blob on 5 and 14. Hopefully this is the start of my handicap moving back to where it should be. Well done me!
In second place, Andy Simpkin with 22 points. It's been a while since I've written anything about Andy but I have to say that if he hadn't fallen apart on 14-16 he would've had it with what was still an excellent round of 83. Well done Andy and thanks.
Peter Creighton went out in 20 to take the front 9. An excellent round today scoring 35 points, not quite enough to make the top 2. Well done Peter.
John James took the back 9 with 16 points and another solid round of 34 points securing 4th place. Well done JJ.
