Scores for Saturday 9 March 2024



Inspired by 5 of 13 players getting 12 on the front 9 and a further 2 players getting 12 on the back 9 this week combined with the sticky muddy conditions we still find ourselves playing in despite the beautiful spring like weather that greeted our start this week. It was nice to be out playing and not worrying about waterproofs and umbrellas for once. The scoring didn't really reflect the benign conditions with the average gross score 93.8 and the average stableford score 29.38.
 


For those of you hat don't have kids less than 20 ish years old this is an image from Disney's "Home on the Range" which is apparently where Andy prefers to play his golf having beaten James comprehensively at Redbourn range following last weeks suspension of play. He followed up with a marginal win this week on the course but no prizes in this two horse race. 

5 birdies this week: Pete Laurence (17) Coenraad (3) Jock (11) Richard (8) and James (11) Well done gents.

Our winner played with me on Thursday and was +1 after 4 holes before relaxing back into a more usual scoring pattern but I was not surprised to see Martin Lythgoe leading the field in the club house with 37 points. Well done Martin, a solid return to the weekend activity that matters most!!

In second place, Martin Deery managed 34 points to marginally separate himself from the rest of the field. Well done Martin, you obviously turned up late enough to have missed he warm up. Well done Martin. 

The front 9 went to Coenraad who chose to join the Dirty Dozen on the back 9 rather than the front 9. Well done Coenraad.

The back 9 went to me with 20 points. I started very badly, only managing 1 point for the first 4 holes but gradually settled into some sort of form, joining the dirty dozen on the front 9 then smashing the back 9. Well done me!

I'm writing this in Falmouth and the weather is quite stunning this morning, hopefully is stays with us for some time.

Middle of the green today! Windy again today, but that wasn't a problem! A nice warm brisk breeze from the south made it seem like we were driving into the wind for the most part today but we seemed to cope ok with that, it was the greens that were the problem. Even the best puts today were coming up short or swerving from the hole. All of them spent more time in the air than on the ground just bobbling along.  13 players set out today but only 12 returned. Jock was lost somewhere along the way leaving a 2-ball to wait patiently behind our 4 ball. Steve and Martin both made the most of the extra time they had (see below) Average scores were not great: 99.25 average gross score and 26.25 average stableford score. Judging from what I saw the putting was the biggest contributor to extra shots.  Only 2 birdies today. Martin Lythgoe on 10 and Brian Geddes on 18. Well done both! Still the extra time that Steve Reynolds had as a result helped him refocus for his back 9 and he came in...

  Ball hunting was the game this week, at least for some of our number. The rough has thickened given the recent rain and sunshine combination and it's making it very hard to find balls that find their way in, not ideal for our standard of golf. This combined with the firming up of the course would make ideal conditions for our one and only metro-gnome and it looked like he was in the hunt on the front 9 until his groin gave out following the other side effect of good weather, gardening duty. I have a sign for you Paul, refer to it on Thursdays or Fridays.... Anyway rest up and we'll see you back to form in no time.  The weather this week was stunning, summer having followed us back from Menorca, thankfully the wind hasn't followed us! The course is in fantastic shape but they have let the greens grow out a bit making putting pace a bit tricky to judge. I'm sure this resulted in a few shots left out there this week, it did in our group.  Average scores this week reflect...

  Due to Brian moving in the next few weeks the newsletter team is looking for a person to assist with the production of this newsletter, do you have the skills required, a flair for an arty production, at least a grade C in English Language 'O' level or GCSE. Please make contact. No interview required and no remuneration provided, what more could you want? Anyway on to the golf.................... The day started out a bit chilly but turned into a beautiful day. The course was in fabulous condition with the bunkers that were in play in a good state. Lots of work going on around the course with a number of bunkers being worked on and the removal of the old winter green on the second, how many more will disappear I wonder?  A chip in for Andy Simpkin on the 6th to make a par even though it was a thinned shot, but I won't mention that. A monster 50ft putt for Jason on a hole that escapes my memory, told you I would forget by the time I got home Pete L. The average gross score...
