A humid summer morning and must consternation at a later than planned start due to someone not getting out of bed to open the gate until 7pm!

 

The shout went out to warn people of long delays on the tee – “There’s a queue a mile long, at least an hour”, “it’s about 30 minutes”, “what queue?” – most of us got off on our allotted timeslot thanks to the 10 minute spacing still in force at the club.

 

Bounce outs and bunkers are still the hot topic but seems today the balls were holding in the holes although the scores maybe suggest bounce outs were the least of our worries today. The rough is ROUGH at the moment and claiming more than the average number of balls and people were definitely struggling with the greens which were slow today following a week of perfect growing conditions.

 

Birdies today for Jock (18th) Martin Lythgoe (11th) and Richard Hyne (14th) and another Eagle for the group on 18, this time to the Bridesmaid. Well done guys.

 

Average score today was down a bit at 28.5 courtesy of a few low to mid-20s scores.

 

In first place, out on his own this week with 38 points is Martin Lythgoe. Martin couldn’t join the call today due to family birthday duties. Well done Martin.

 

In Second place with 35 points, Richard Hyne. Well done Richard.

 

The Front 9 goes to Andy Simpkin with 16 points on countback from Roger who sadly blobbed the 8th leaving the door open for Andy to take the prize. Well Done Andy.

 

The Back 9 goes to Steve Reynolds with 19 points courtesy of that splendid Eagle on the 18th. Nice one Steve, maybe second place next week?

 

Btw, on the call we discussed the money owed. Steve Reynolds has volunteered to setup a PayPal clearing process and provide instructions on how to transfer the moneys. I suggest we do this in the next few weeks as a number are getting deeper into the red (£20 so far.) I suggest we do a couple more weeks before settling the account so that the numbers don’t get too big. See the handicap table for where you stand.

Middle of the green today! Windy again today, but that wasn't a problem! A nice warm brisk breeze from the south made it seem like we were driving into the wind for the most part today but we seemed to cope ok with that, it was the greens that were the problem. Even the best puts today were coming up short or swerving from the hole. All of them spent more time in the air than on the ground just bobbling along.  13 players set out today but only 12 returned. Jock was lost somewhere along the way leaving a 2-ball to wait patiently behind our 4 ball. Steve and Martin both made the most of the extra time they had (see below) Average scores were not great: 99.25 average gross score and 26.25 average stableford score. Judging from what I saw the putting was the biggest contributor to extra shots.  Only 2 birdies today. Martin Lythgoe on 10 and Brian Geddes on 18. Well done both! Still the extra time that Steve Reynolds had as a result helped him refocus for his back 9 and he came in...

  Ball hunting was the game this week, at least for some of our number. The rough has thickened given the recent rain and sunshine combination and it's making it very hard to find balls that find their way in, not ideal for our standard of golf. This combined with the firming up of the course would make ideal conditions for our one and only metro-gnome and it looked like he was in the hunt on the front 9 until his groin gave out following the other side effect of good weather, gardening duty. I have a sign for you Paul, refer to it on Thursdays or Fridays.... Anyway rest up and we'll see you back to form in no time.  The weather this week was stunning, summer having followed us back from Menorca, thankfully the wind hasn't followed us! The course is in fantastic shape but they have let the greens grow out a bit making putting pace a bit tricky to judge. I'm sure this resulted in a few shots left out there this week, it did in our group.  Average scores this week reflect...

  Due to Brian moving in the next few weeks the newsletter team is looking for a person to assist with the production of this newsletter, do you have the skills required, a flair for an arty production, at least a grade C in English Language 'O' level or GCSE. Please make contact. No interview required and no remuneration provided, what more could you want? Anyway on to the golf.................... The day started out a bit chilly but turned into a beautiful day. The course was in fabulous condition with the bunkers that were in play in a good state. Lots of work going on around the course with a number of bunkers being worked on and the removal of the old winter green on the second, how many more will disappear I wonder?  A chip in for Andy Simpkin on the 6th to make a par even though it was a thinned shot, but I won't mention that. A monster 50ft putt for Jason on a hole that escapes my memory, told you I would forget by the time I got home Pete L. The average gross score...
