Scores for Saturday 4 July 2020

A windy and gloomy Saturday morning and as we set off at 07:30 I was fairly confident that there would be some poor scoring for the day.

Our group just couldn’t get going despite 4 excellent first drives we found ourselves spraying balls all over every part of the course.

I have a sequel to great escape on 12 last week. This week I hit a perfect 8 iron off the tee and inspired by Pete putting 3 balls into the hedge decided to do exactly the same. I played a provisional onto the ladies tee of the 13th hole. Faced with a tricky downhill approach I decided approach wedge chip and run was the way to go. My chip was a little enthusiastic reaching to about 5 feet from the green, out of bounds was beckoning. However, due to my recent blessings on this particular hole, I caught the sand on the edge of the bunker which checked the ball perfectly allowing it to trickle down to about 8 feet from the hole. A nice straight put saw me down in 6 (for 2) despite the hedge penalty. I hope to make this hole easier in future but I’m happy to keep sharing great escape stories if they continue.

The highlight of our round this week was the pint of Morretti at the end of the round. Sat outside on the patio we had the good fortune to witness Andy Simpkin fail to convert a birdie on what was otherwise a below average round.

As predicted the scoring was low this week with average of just 28.69

Birdies for James (18), Jock (1), Roger Gibbs (18) and Richard (10) – well done guys, particularly in the blowy conditions.

Our winner this week was Roger Gibbs who beat Pete Creighton on countback with 37 points courtesy of Roger’s birdie on 18. Roger was reported as claiming to feel a little guilty about taking victory from Pete but I suspect not guilty enough to donate the prize to Peter. Well done Roger, another splendid mid-80s round.

Peter managed another excellent round of 91 to take second place. A blob on 9 was the only blemish on an otherwise immaculate card. Well done Peter.

Our front 9 winner, always in the mix, winner of the 2019 Geddes Hack Attack, Paul “the champ” Gardner with 17 points, on count back from Jock Hunter. Paul definitely favours the summer months, are we about to see a purple patch from one of our more consistent golfers? Well done Paul.

The back 9 goes to Martin Lythgoe with 18 points on countback from James despite James getting a birdie on the 18th. Well done Martin, a solid finish.
