Scores for Saturday 17th May 2025

 


Weather was chilly to start with but then improved to a sunny day from about 11:00am onwards. The greens hard again but running true. A lot of working going on around the course. Bunkers being filled in on the 5th and paths repaired between the 13th and 14th. Evidence of the sprinklers now working and also a new gate constructed to allow emergency services access to the club located near the 11th tee.

Congratulations to Lucky Tony who had a hole in one on the 7th on the Par 3 course whilst playing golf with his grandson.

Congratulations to Peter Laurence winning his doubles match with his partner Lee Edwards, they had to go to the 20th hole.

A good win for Roger today with a grand 37 points. Duncan second with 35 points, a repeat of the positions for the JJ cup. If history repeats itself they should come last and second last next week.

I myself (Paul) had a dire time in the bunkers again which put paid to any decent score. Twice I hit a great bunker shot on the third attempt!

All of my group managed to find the hedge on the 13th, very poor.

It's the weekend of the USPGA tournament and with that in Steve B's mind Steve said on the last, "this putt is for the USPGA win", a short putt which circumnavigated the hole and he missed.

"The story of Jason on 11.

Tee shot sliced right into the scrub. Had to move a load of logs from cut trees.

Chopped out. Then went for green and pulled it left into a ditch. Moved another bunch of branches and wood. Spent 5 minutes changing grip position to hit the ball and not the back of the ditch. 

Chipped out onto the green top tier. 

Failed to win my £5 bet that he couldn't keep it short of the pin with the first putt. Tapped in for 6 and 1 point."

The average gross score today was 93.09 points and the average Stableford score was 30.45.

Best gross of the day was from Steve Reynolds and James Miller with 84.

There were 0 Eagles or better today.

There were 2 birdies today.

James Miller with 1 on hole 1. Putted in from just off the green.
Jason Landau with 1 on hole 16.

Our winner today with 37 points was Roger Small.
In second place on 35 points was Duncan Miller.
The front 9 went to Jock Hunter with 18 points.
The back 9 went to Stephen Brewerton with 18 points.

It was good to be back on our home course after visiting Donnington Valley last weekend, I will never complain about the slopes on ours again. The greens were in excellent condition today, unfortunately the ropes have been put up to protect the approaches and it is a long walk from your trolly when you end up short of the green. The weather was fairly kind to us today with a few showers towards the end. A small field of only 9 players with no outrageous scores. The course was fairly empty today and we had a leisurely four hour round. An excellent score from Steve Reynolds today to take first place, not the bridesmaid on this occasion. Martin Lythgoe asked for a picture of the colourful bruise he inflicted on me last Monday, he said it was for his wife. I (Paul), thought I was playing well today after a reasonable front nine but 1 point from the first four holes on the back put paid to any hope of winning anything. The weather today was calm and dry. Some tricky pin positions with the 14th being the worst. The fairways have not improved a whole lot but not too dissimilar to Burhill which a few of us played earlier in the week. I have added two new items to the website menu the first is a list of members we have had over the years since 2004, that's about as far has by emails go back. Today was the Earlybirds Christmas party, pleasant weather greeted the golfers with the Sun actually coming out to warm us up towards the end of the round. The question on everybody's lips was could Paul Gardner win for a third year in a row. Rumour has it he was allowed to win in previous years as nobody wanted to arrange the following year's party. This year Paul was drawn in the last group to make it harder for the other players to watch his score. Paul was drawn with Peter C and Luck Tony. Tony playing a very steady round until he somewhat collapsed on the last, probably worrying that he may win. He managed to grab second place on count back from Roger Gibbs, three player tied on 35 points. Paul tried his best but low scores on 8, 9, 10 and 11 put paid to his chances. Our winner today and with the pleasure of booking next year goes to Coenraad. A solid 35 points to beat Roger G and Tony on countback. Prizes awarded to day.
