This is a late newsletter as I have been on holiday to Finland, Estonia and Latvia. Very interesting places if you fancy going. Ate Reindeer and Elk, very nice and they also do Bear but couldn't find anywhere that had any. If anybody remembers Wicker's World this sounds like one of his travel shows, I thought I could call mine Gardner's World but I think that is already taken!  

Anyway back to the golf, Class of the field today was James with a great score 77 and a Stableford of 39 points.

"Pete W. Andy and I had an enjoyable Round with Lucky TonE. There were of course plenty of accusations of low handicap luck and bemoaning that as a high handicap Tony doesn’t get luck. Tony had put a different club in the bag today. A chipper. It didn’t really work that well some times coming off too low going past the hole other times popping up and stopping short. He gave up with it and on 16 chipped in for a par with his wedge. Proving that Tony is lucky after all. He of course said it was a class shot."

"The pick of my round was a 9iron from the fairway bunker on the 4th to hit the green and end within 4 foot to set up a birdie."

"Tony admitted in the clubhouse that playing with us low handicappers had lifted his game. Think being called a low handicapper must have made Andy’s day."

Next weekend is the Swindle Challenge, something we have never won, it is our time to rise.

The average gross score today was 91.08 points and the average Stableford score was 31.31.

Best gross of the day was from James Miller with 77.

There were 0 Eagles or better today.

There were 5 birdies today.

James Miller with 2 on holes 4 and 12.
Coenraad Fourie with 2 on holes 2 and 17.
Peter Williams with 1 on hole 17.

Our winner today with 39 points was James Miller.
In second place on 35 points was Andrew Simpkin.
The front 9 went to Martin Lythgoe with 19 points.
The back 9 went to Coenraad Fourie with 19 points.

The day started out a bit chilly but turned into a beautiful day. The course was in fabulous condition with the bunkers that were in play in a good state. Lots of work going on around the course with a number of bunkers being worked on and the removal of the old winter green on the second, how many more will disappear I wonder?  A chip in for Andy Simpkin on the 6th to make a par even though it was a thinned shot, but I won't mention that. It was good to be back on our home course after visiting Donnington Valley last weekend, I will never complain about the slopes on ours again. The greens were in excellent condition today, unfortunately the ropes have been put up to protect the approaches and it is a long walk from your trolly when you end up short of the green. The weather was fairly kind to us today with a few showers towards the end. A small field of only 9 players with no outrageous scores. The course was fairly empty today and we had a leisurely four hour round. An excellent score from Steve Reynolds today to take first place, not the bridesmaid on this occasion. Martin Lythgoe asked for a picture of the colourful bruise he inflicted on me last Monday, he said it was for his wife. I (Paul), thought I was playing well today after a reasonable front nine but 1 point from the first four holes on the back put paid to any hope of winning anything.   Magic man was out with us on the course today. Paul Gardner (AKA Paul Daniels?) performed some pretty amazing slight of hand/magic with the ball on the putting green. We watched in amazement as he putted the ball straight through the flag to the opposite side of the hole. Had he done this just once we would've suspected it was just a fluke and maybe our good old friend lady luck was up to no good but he repeated this feat on a number of occasions. Did he make the ball disappear and reappear or was it the hole? Either way we were all perplexed by this show. Steve Brewerton had a go at doing what Paul was doing but could only manage to sling-shot round the hole and end some way back from where he came. Best leave these dark arts to those who understand them! Paul tried to play it down by missing a certain put on 16 by hitting the ground before the ball but we were not fooled by this, we've seen what he is capable of.
