Scores for Saturday 10th May 2025



The weather was glorious today not too hot, the course was looking splendid however the greens were quite hard.

For me (Paul) the day did not start to well, at 7:30am, not quite up yet, I realised that my tee time was 7:40am not the normal 8:30ish. So a quick message to my playing partners that I would be late and meet them on the second or third, a quick splash and dash in the bathroom, load up the car and high tail it to the club. I got there at 7:40am and ran to the first tee. My group was halfway down the first fairway, fortuitously Duncan had put his tee shot into the trees so they were somewhat delayed. I caught them up but did not play the first. Lovely drive for me on the second but stuck the next into the trees on the left, managed to get a six for my limited efforts. I thought at this stage all was lost. What followed was quite a good round and I ended up on 36 points, oh for the missed first.

We finished around 11:30 my three playing partners left after a drink and a bite to eat. I thought I was in for a chance of a win of some description so thought I would wait for the other two groups. Well an hour later they started to come in. I was closely following the score cards. My closest rivals were Jock and Martin Lythgoe. With two holes to play Jock was six points behind me and Martin five points. One hole to play and Jock was four points behind and Martin 3 points, I thought I was at least on for a second place, I mean Jock can't birdie the last can he? Well of course he can! So that brought Jock equal to me. Martin still to finish the 18th. He only goes and pars the last hole for three points. Hence Jock takes first, Martin second and me on third all on 36 points. Me losing on count back.

On a plus side for me the Flapjacks sold at the bar were very nice today.  

Other things of note, Duncan, almost in the bushes on the right of 8, managed to get a par with a narrowly missed putt for a birdie. Jock a great birdie on 18 to take the win.

Good to see Brian on Thursday for an afternoons golf followed by food and drinks in St Albans. It sounds like everybody had a good time.

The average gross score today was 91.58 points and the average Stableford score was 31.25.

Best gross of the day was from Pete Laurence and James Miller with 85.

There were 0 Eagles or better today.

There were 5 birdies today.

Jock Hunter with 1 on hole 18.
Martin Lythgoe with 1 on hole 8.
Pete Laurence with 1 on hole 12.
Duncan Miller with 1 on hole 12.
James Miller with 1 on hole 12.

Our winner today with 36 points was Jock Hunter.
In second place on 36 points was Martin Lythgoe.
The front 9 went to Roger Small with 19 points.
The back 9 went to Pete Laurence with 19 points.

The day started out a bit chilly but turned into a beautiful day. The course was in fabulous condition with the bunkers that were in play in a good state. Lots of work going on around the course with a number of bunkers being worked on and the removal of the old winter green on the second, how many more will disappear I wonder?  A chip in for Andy Simpkin on the 6th to make a par even though it was a thinned shot, but I won't mention that. It was good to be back on our home course after visiting Donnington Valley last weekend, I will never complain about the slopes on ours again. The greens were in excellent condition today, unfortunately the ropes have been put up to protect the approaches and it is a long walk from your trolly when you end up short of the green. The weather was fairly kind to us today with a few showers towards the end. A small field of only 9 players with no outrageous scores. The course was fairly empty today and we had a leisurely four hour round. An excellent score from Steve Reynolds today to take first place, not the bridesmaid on this occasion. Martin Lythgoe asked for a picture of the colourful bruise he inflicted on me last Monday, he said it was for his wife. I (Paul), thought I was playing well today after a reasonable front nine but 1 point from the first four holes on the back put paid to any hope of winning anything.   Magic man was out with us on the course today. Paul Gardner (AKA Paul Daniels?) performed some pretty amazing slight of hand/magic with the ball on the putting green. We watched in amazement as he putted the ball straight through the flag to the opposite side of the hole. Had he done this just once we would've suspected it was just a fluke and maybe our good old friend lady luck was up to no good but he repeated this feat on a number of occasions. Did he make the ball disappear and reappear or was it the hole? Either way we were all perplexed by this show. Steve Brewerton had a go at doing what Paul was doing but could only manage to sling-shot round the hole and end some way back from where he came. Best leave these dark arts to those who understand them! Paul tried to play it down by missing a certain put on 16 by hitting the ground before the ball but we were not fooled by this, we've seen what he is capable of.
