Scores for Saturday 28 June 2025


Weather was hot and dry. The dry course playing much shorted as the fairways are rock hard with the greens being quite slow as they are not cutting them short to protect them from the heat. No doubt they will be cut for the Club Championship next weekend. Good luck to all those competing.

A splendid score by Martin Deery taking first place with 40 points on top of a share of best gross with a gross of 86. Must be one of his best rounds ever.

"My birdie story on 12...

Completely topped a wedge off the tee, but it rolled down the dry hill giving me 245 yards in. 7 iron thinned into the GUR bunker on the right. Putted from the edge of it down past the other bunker to the left side fringe. 12 ft putt back up the hill for birdie."

"Jock and Martin( well, mostly Martin) score 70 points for our Summer League team, taking us to 201 total and TOP!"

Later disproved as this was their best three scores and before the fourth weekend results had been issued. Never mind.

The average gross score today was 91.45 points and the average Stableford score was 31.00.

Best gross of the day was from Martin Deery and Pete Laurence and James Miller with 86.

There were 0 Eagles or better today.

There were 4 birdies today.

Martin Deery with 1 on hole 12.
Duncan Miller with 1 on hole 12.
Pete Laurence with 1 on hole 5.
James Miller with 1 on hole 17.

Our winner today with 40 points was Martin Deery.
In second place on 36 points was Andrew Simpkin.
The front 9 went to Jason Landau with 19 points.
The back 9 went to Duncan Miller with 21 points.

The day started out a bit chilly but turned into a beautiful day. The course was in fabulous condition with the bunkers that were in play in a good state. Lots of work going on around the course with a number of bunkers being worked on and the removal of the old winter green on the second, how many more will disappear I wonder?  A chip in for Andy Simpkin on the 6th to make a par even though it was a thinned shot, but I won't mention that. It was good to be back on our home course after visiting Donnington Valley last weekend, I will never complain about the slopes on ours again. The greens were in excellent condition today, unfortunately the ropes have been put up to protect the approaches and it is a long walk from your trolly when you end up short of the green. The weather was fairly kind to us today with a few showers towards the end. A small field of only 9 players with no outrageous scores. The course was fairly empty today and we had a leisurely four hour round. An excellent score from Steve Reynolds today to take first place, not the bridesmaid on this occasion. Martin Lythgoe asked for a picture of the colourful bruise he inflicted on me last Monday, he said it was for his wife. I (Paul), thought I was playing well today after a reasonable front nine but 1 point from the first four holes on the back put paid to any hope of winning anything.   Magic man was out with us on the course today. Paul Gardner (AKA Paul Daniels?) performed some pretty amazing slight of hand/magic with the ball on the putting green. We watched in amazement as he putted the ball straight through the flag to the opposite side of the hole. Had he done this just once we would've suspected it was just a fluke and maybe our good old friend lady luck was up to no good but he repeated this feat on a number of occasions. Did he make the ball disappear and reappear or was it the hole? Either way we were all perplexed by this show. Steve Brewerton had a go at doing what Paul was doing but could only manage to sling-shot round the hole and end some way back from where he came. Best leave these dark arts to those who understand them! Paul tried to play it down by missing a certain put on 16 by hitting the ground before the ball but we were not fooled by this, we've seen what he is capable of.
