Pleasant weather today, no rain and a light wind. The course was looking much better with some good grass growth. Old bunkers on the 5th and 12th have now been filled in with soil rather than being left as  rough grass filled depressions. All the new bunkers have been filled with sand. The GUR areas around them will be with us for a few months. 

We had to endure unpredictable greens this week, unfortunately it was maintenance week and the greens have been hollow tined.

Why Hollow Tine?

"Golf greens endure a lot of foot traffic. This compacts the soil, making it hard for water and nutrients to penetrate and for the grass to breathe. Hollow tining relieves this compaction, allowing the grass roots to absorb moisture and oxygen more efficiently. It also aids in managing thatch (a layer of organic matter that can hinder grass health) and improves drainage, leading to stronger, healthier greens."

Golf was slow today the first group holding up play leading to a 4 hour 20 minute round despite one of the players moving to the group so he could get away early for a football match.

Scoring was quite low today almost certainly due to the greens but Jason came away with a win. Peter Williams had a good round going and scored a great 20 points on the front nine but lost the win on countback. Paul had a lousy front nine of 11 points but managed to score 19 on the back nine due to back to back birdies on 16 and 17, he had a long putt for a third birdie on 18 but missed and ended up with a 5. Martin Deery took the front nine with 18 points.

Duncan nearly made a very adventurous par on the 12th by only progressing his ball 20yds off the tee and almost going out of bounds. Second shot hit a silver birch tree that Duncan thought he could miss, another advance of 20 yds or so. Third hit over the hedge and fourth just off the green to the right. Chip/Putt for a five but he missed it. He also chipped in for a par on the 6th.

I am sure we are all looking forward to the swindle Autumn Cup next weekend at Wokefield Golf Club and the Ryder Cup the same weekend, come on Europe.

The average gross score today was 93.08 and the average Stableford score was 29.85.

Best gross of the day was from Peter Williams with 84.

There were 0 Eagles or better today.

There were 5 birdies today.

Steve Reynolds with 2 on holes 5 and 17.
Paul Gardner with 2 on holes 16 and 17.
Pete Laurence with 1 on hole 18.

Our winner today with 33 points was Jason Landau.
In second place on 33 points was Peter Williams.
The front 9 went to Martin Deery with 18 points.
The back 9 went to Paul Gardner with 19 points.

The weather today was calm and dry. Some tricky pin positions with the 14th being the worst. The fairways have not improved a whole lot but not too dissimilar to Burhill which a few of us played earlier in the week. It was good to be back on our home course after visiting Donnington Valley last weekend, I will never complain about the slopes on ours again. The greens were in excellent condition today, unfortunately the ropes have been put up to protect the approaches and it is a long walk from your trolly when you end up short of the green. The weather was fairly kind to us today with a few showers towards the end. A small field of only 9 players with no outrageous scores. The course was fairly empty today and we had a leisurely four hour round. An excellent score from Steve Reynolds today to take first place, not the bridesmaid on this occasion. Martin Lythgoe asked for a picture of the colourful bruise he inflicted on me last Monday, he said it was for his wife. I (Paul), thought I was playing well today after a reasonable front nine but 1 point from the first four holes on the back put paid to any hope of winning anything. Good weather greeted us on Saturday and the course is starting to look better. Fairways are starting to grow back after a week of on and off rain. Greens more receptive and greens a little slower. New bunkers are looking great, excellent work by the Neary's and by the greenkeeping staff. Filled in bunkers are much better than the grassed depressions we have been accustomed to in the past. I (Paul) especially like the changes to the 14th, also the 3rd is looking great. 17th has a lot of work going on around the green with large areas of G.U.R.  Well done to Paul for his win today he sunk some good putts. Of note group 3 had all four players on 34 points coming to the last. Stories from the course John James to Steve Reynolds "You have a very Christian swing" , we think he meant crisp.
