Course looking fabulous today with the ropes taken away from all the filled in bunkers, many of these no longer GUR. Much more definition to the course. The weather was again kind to us with no wind and no rain. All looking good for some high Stableford scores.

It was the first weekend for the Winter League with many of the group taking part.

I played with James today and he was playing faultlessly unfortunately the 17th and 18th were not kind to him, a poor chip on 17th and an overhit second to 18th put him into second place overall. James managed to par 11 of the holes and carded a gross 78. Well done James.

Steve Brewerton recovering well from the trees, especially on 12 where he first nearly lost it in the trees off the tee, then hit the second out to the side, third again into the trees to the right of the green, a great chip shot onto the green with a possibility of a 5 but missed the putt to take a 6.

Some good front nine scores with several on 19 points, similarly on the back nine with 5 with more than 18 points.

Scores on the 14th show that this now appears to be an easier hole with 8 pars and one birdie out of sixteen players.

Winner today was lucky Tony scoring a fabulous 41 points and a gross 91 probably one of his best this year.

Reporters on the course

Roger Small
"Tony started off his historic round by hooking his first tee shot into the first tree on the left of the fairway. From that point on, I don't think I have seen him hit his famed irons straighter. Well, he sliced his drive on the eighth, but generally, he recovered quickly with powerful, straight second shots. When you add to this, that he knocked just about anything within 15 feet straight into the hole, he was definitely on fire. He teed off on the 18th knowing that he only needed one point to win. His par was masterful. A perfectly played hole with not the slightest hint of nerves."

Duncan Miller
"My birdie story on 12...

Completely topped a wedge off the tee, but it rolled down the dry hill giving me 245 yards in. 7 iron thinned into the GUR bunker on the right. Putted from the edge of it down past the other bunker to the left side fringe. 12 ft putt back up the hill for birdie."

"We had entertainment in group 3 today.
John James not playing the best with 10 points through 8. Then holed a long putt on 9. 4 for 4. Took 4 shots to get on the front of the green on 11 and holed a monster putt down the slope.
On 12 he took 3 shots to get within chipping range. Duffed the first chip. Berated himself five times and chipped it in from 30 yards for 5. 13 points in 4 holes."

"Richard left his tee shot short on 14 behind the new bunker. Flipped a lovely chip 20 yards over the bunker landed it on the fringe. It rolled out onto the green and into the hole for birdie."

Steve Reynolds
"Today I didn't park in my usual spot. Tony stopped to ask why and I said I'm hoping for a change in fortune. So he parked in my spot and said I've parked in a single figure handicap spot, and I said you play well then. He did! Now he owes me half of his prize money"

Martin Deery
"While standing on the edge of the 13th Roger Gibbs had a sudden urge to find out the following :
If he made an elephant noise into one of the blue tubes going into the bunker would a similar noise come out of the tube on the opposite side ?
The experiment proved that APGC have had foresight to fit elephant noise filtering between the two tubes .
We all relaxed with this new found knowledge , Gibbs stepped forward and putted out for a par !"

Peter Creighton
"Can we talk about Andy, putting from 3 ft on the 12th for a 5 and getting a ………….9!! That was entertaining.
And how we encouraged the WINNER!"

And from the winner himself Tony Froud
"I won’t bore you with all the details but we were both on 38 points standing on the 18th tee. James (playing off 8) double bogied it. Me, playing off 24, struck a 4 iron off the tee to position A, clipped a 9 iron to the heart of the green and 2 putted for par."

The average gross score today was 91.88 and the average Stableford score was a very respectable 33.00.

Best gross of the day was from James Miller with 78.

There were 0 Eagles or better today.

There were 2 birdies today.

James Miller with 1 on hole 10.
Richard Hyne with 1 on hole 14.

Our winner today with 41 points was Tony Froud.
In second place on 38 points was James Miller.
The front 9 went to Richard Hyne with 17 points.
The back 9 went to Duncan Miller with 20 points.
