Roger escapes with the spoils

It was billed as a fairly ordinary Saturday Swindle, but ordinary went out of the window somewhere around the first tee. Roger Small emerged as the winner with a fine 37 Stableford points, including 18 on the front nine. Jock Hunter was runner-up on 34, while Coenraad Fourie and Martin Deery both managed 33 and 32 respectively.

The official scorecard tells only half the story. Roger’s round featured five pars and eleven double-bogeys-or-worse — a statistical combination that suggests he spent much of the afternoon alternately finding pars and finding himself.

Enter Roger the Dodger

The accompanying report put it rather better. Roger was apparently producing pars for four points even after some decidedly unpromising tee shots, with balls having to be found along the way. The running joke about The Beano and The Dandy eventually led to the perfect nickname: Roger the Dodger.

The grand finale came on the 18th. After losing a ball and visiting two bunkers, Roger somehow escaped with a seven. Whether that actually produced a Stableford point is, according to the eyewitness account, open to artistic interpretation. What is beyond dispute is that Roger appeared to have an impressive supply of get-out-of-jail cards.

The numbers don't lie — unfortunately

Nine players took part. The average gross score was 95 and the average Stableford score was 31.67. Roger’s 37 was the day’s best Stableford score, while the best gross score belonged to Steve Reynolds, with 83.

Across the field there were 40 pars and three birdies. There were also 61 holes recorded as double-bogey or worse, which may explain why nobody was in a hurry to produce a detailed forensic report of the round.

And finally…

Steve survived the Beano and Dandy discussion, although there is no evidence that anyone actually improved their reading skills. Monopoly has apparently been suggested for another week. Given the number of get-out-of-jail cards Roger required on Saturday, perhaps that is the most appropriate next experiment.

Best gross of the day was from Steve Reynolds with 83.

Glorious weather greeted us today and the last group was Jason Landau, James Miller, Peter Creighton and Peter Williams who would be our winner? An early start of 9:30am would mean we finish at a reasonable hour and we would not catch any traffic on the way home. The course was much quieter than yesterday and we managed to get around in just over four hours. Duncan did not even attempt to play golf today but became the roving photographer giving us a good shot of Martin Deery getting the nearest the pin on 17. Weather today was good no rain, no wind, course lookin excellent, another week or so and the new bunkers should be in play. Two injured or unwell players didn't make it so get well soon to John and Stevie B. The fairway definition is much better however between the fairway and the thick rough the edges have been cut with two opposingly cut 1metre wide strips. These make the actual fairways very narrow in places, players are also not sure if these strips are still fairway, I believe not but we could do with some clarification from the club as we currently have pick and place in action, does that include these strips? A good day for birdies with 10 in total, hole 14 in its new configuration, giving away seven pars from the 14 players. Martin L putted in from off the green in the dip on hole 2 for a great birdie. The weather was not kind to us today and we had a number of dropouts. It rained for most of our round, which no doubt affected our scores. Today we were joined by Brian, it was good to see Brian and Emma again, we hope Brian enjoyed his golf and the changes to the course. Excellent round by James today with a gross 79, 34 points and four birdies. Richard has now moved to the top of the Player Of The Year table on 26 points but it's still all to play for with two weekends to play with eleven players able to win, although some of those will need two wins. Richard also leads the money list. On the course we now have a robot cutting the fairway on the 8th. Appeared to be doing a good job.
