Autumn Cup 2021 @ Wokefield Park - Sunday October 3

DAY 1

An overcast and damp start to this year's trip. 3 didn’t make it but we still had 13 turning out for the first day.

Groups for the day were as follows:

Tee 1    Roger Small, Martin Lythgoe, Duncan Miller

Tee 2    Peter Laurence, Brian Geddes, Paul Gardner

Tee 3    Peter Creighton, Stephen Brewerton, Mick Pond, Andy Simpkin

Tee 4    Steve Reynolds, James Miller, Tony Froud, Roger Gibbs

Roger Small, last year's winner, led out the first group, this was luck of the draw but with hind-site should be the way of things going forward. Perhaps a ceremonial tee-off with the previous winner going out first?

As we walked down the first tee a blanket of cloud rolled back to reveal clear blue skies. The wind was up but we were in for some sunshine to help the day along. We were very lucky with the weather, there was plenty of standing water in the bunkers but the course was receptive making play more pleasant than the baked fairways we've grown used to of late.

James Miller and Steve Reynolds got off to a flying start with both registering Par/Birdie on the first two holes. James continued in this manner finishing the front 9 just 1 over gross par! The front 9 saw birdies from Martin Lythgoe (5) and Duncan Miller (6) although Duncan did take FOREVER to find his ball on 6 after driving to within range and hitting his second shot under the rope of the life ring next to the deep pond near the green. A chip and a put saw Duncan (eventually) celebrating the highlight of his round.

The back 9 saw James continue his form with birdie, par, par before settling back into a few bogies followed by a strong finish of birdie and par on the last two holes. A total of 38 points, gross 76 (+4) placed James in a strong first place. Steve also had a strong back 9 and finished par, par, birdie to secure the bridesmaid spot with 37 points, gross 82 (+10)

The front 9 went to Martin Lythgoe on countback from Roger Small with 18 points. The back 9 went to Pete Laurence with 18 points.

Longest drive went to Duncan Miller on the 5th hole, he managed to find the tiny strip of fairway ahead of the green. Longest drive went to Brian Geddes on 11 despite Pete Laurence marginally outdriving him but just missing the fairway. It has to be said that Brian's drive was fortunate to find fairway behind the fairway bunker on 11 as it seemed certain that the sand was where it had come to rest from the tee box.

Nearest the pin in 2 on the 7th hole went to Steve Reynolds on Day 1. Nearest the pin on the 12th hole, over the water, went to Andy Simpkin.

Wokefield made an excellent venue for the evening again this year, the food was good and staff did an excellent job hosting the dinner and drinks.

Day 2

It rained heavily overnight again according to Pete Laurence and the puddles of surface water around the course on day 2. The tee was very busy with societies and it was clear we were going to be in for a fairly slow round.

Day 2 groups went out in reverse score order. We had only 12 playing on day 2 and the groups were as follows.

Tee 1    Peter Creighton, Roger Gibbs, Brian Geddes, Duncan Miller

Tee 2    Roger Small, Mick Pond, Paul Gardner, Steve Brewerton

Tee 3    Steve Reynolds, Pete Laurence, Martin Lythgoe, Andy Simpkin

James was not playing on day 2 due to family commitments so Steve Reynolds was at the top of the leader board, not a place he's particularly comfortable with generally.

Steve got off to a steady start completing the front 9 with 17 points and a gross score of 41 (+5) with 5 pars under his belt. Roger Gibbs and Peter Creighton were both pushing hard from the back of the field with 18 and 19 points respectively. Only one birdie on the front 9 on day 2 for Duncan Miller on the 5th. The back 9 saw Roger and Peter both fall away but Paul Gardner and Andy Simpkin were both snapping at Steve's heals and posted 22 points and 21 points respectively. Only one birdie on the back 9 from our special guest for the weekend Mick Pond. Steve did post a more than respectable 19 points on the back 9 with 6 pars 2 bogies and a double but it wasn't quite enough to take first place.

Andy Simpkin took first place on the last day with 36 points on countback from Steve who took the bridesmaid spot yet again. The front 9 went to Peter Creighton with 19 points and the back 9 to Paul Gardner with 22 points.

Longest drive on 4 went to Brian Geddes and longest drive on 11 went to Martin Lythgoe.

Nearest the pin in two on 7 went again to Steve Reynolds and Nearest the pin on 12 also went to Andy Simpkin again.

Overall

So to the overall placings for the weekend

Steve Reynolds takes first place with 73 points overall and is the 2021 Autumn Cup holder proving once and for all that two bridesmaids do make a bride! Well done Steve, a solid performance over the two days and a well deserved victory.

Andy Simpkin came in second place with a respectable 68 points but was unable to overturn Steve's first day lead.

Thank you all for making organising the trip worthwhile and I look forward to defending the wooden spoon in 2022!
