Roger Small receiving the trophy from John James

A return visit to the Nottinghamshire Golf Club, last year the weather was poor in the run up and not too good when we got there, coupled with poor conditions at the Belfry and atrocious conditions the last time we went to Greetham Valley it was a pleasant surprise to have good weather for both days.

This year we started on the Championship course and ran the JJ Cup first, therefore no warm up game. The competition was run, as normal, with WHS handicaps.

The course was undergoing changes last year but they appear to be completed. Both courses have water on many holes and necessitate some thought on where you are going to hit the ball. Not that some of us have that sort of control over our shots.

The only real complaint we had about the course was about the greens, they were quite bumpy and you had to be firm with your putts.

A great turn out of 18 players with Dan Smith joining us for the first time. Great to have Brian join us all the way from deepest Devon, Brain was last year's winner.

The current state of the winners of the three Early Birds Major competitions, as you can see Paul was on to do a Rory and get a career grand slam, could he do it.................No he collapsed on the back nine and had too many shots as usual in the bunkers. May be next time.

Some great golf by the top five players who all scored 35 points or more. At one point we thought Roger Small was running away with it but he was to finish two shots ahead of Duncan.

Roger Small had a fantastic round and took the JJ Cup with a superb 42 points, so he adds this to Autumn Cup win from 2020. So Roger can do a career grand slam if he wins the Xmas Cup and Coenraad if he wins the Autumn Cup.

Good to have John play a complete round with us for his Cup. John stayed for the presentation to Roger Small.

From reporter James

"Hole 1. Great drive from Roger. Second shot he went for the green and moved the ball a yard. Changed club and chipped it forward only to run into water. Drop. Chipped to a foot. 7 for two. On par 3 Second hole. Missed ball on first shot. Walked off 5 for 2. This continued all round, a mixture of the sublime and ridiculous golf shots. Just like Rory, Roger held himself together brilliantly to get 2 points on 16 and 17 after going in the water on both holes. Was entertaining to watch. It reminded me of Rory winning and throwing away and winning again. Well done Roger ‘Rory’ Small, great achievement to win the first major of the year."

From reporter Tony

"Yes, day 1 was an interesting watch for me. Roger played, overall, the best I’ve seen him whilst James played the worst I’ve ever seen him."

A good dinner that night was followed by Duncan's presentation of 2024 stats, something we all look forward to. Thank you to Duncan for doing that again.
